Auctions is pleased to offer a rare, unusual and gorgeously weathered antique Standing Buddha from Thailand. The original Buddha, Sakyamuni Gautama, or Gautama Siddhartha, was born in India in the 5th-6th century B.C.
He was born into a noble family, but left this life to lead the life of a wandering ascetic and thinker.
Reflecting on the human condition one night while sitting under a Bodi tree, he awoke to find he had realized nirvana, the state of absolute beatitude, and would not be reborn again. He traveled the land, meditated, gained wisdom, and along the way realized impermanence was an undeniable, inescapable fact of life. The rest of his life was spent as a preacher, his teachings contained in a series of documents called the Sutras. Indeed, at the end of his life, the original Buddha, Sakyamuni Gautama, taught that decay was inherent in all composite things - but should not be a cause for despair because each of us could govern this process by nourishing happiness to achieve peace of mind - a state called Buddhahood - and a teaching perfectly exemplified in this sculpture. It is carved from Tenasserim pine wood, a stately and the most tropical of all the pines known for its height, durability and strength. The Buddha measures a commanding 8.5 inches in width by 5 inches in depth by 42 inches in height (21.5 cm by 12.7 cm by 106.6 cm). This statue was once painted, but over time not only has the paint faded, its features and patina have also become scarred by the ravages of time and use; it has lost limbs, appendages and parts of its robe, which expose rusting nails. The wear, however, is consistent with a dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Wonderfully evocative of a Thailand marveled for culture, decay and timelessness, these pieces have now unfortunately all but disappeared and have become highly sought after by collectors. It would make a superb addition to any collection of Asian antiques, Buddhist objects or art related to Buddhism.
